Watchmen
Diggory and I went to see Watchmen last night, as promised, and we both thoroughly enjoyed it.
I didn’t have very high expectations heading into it: the trailers had portrayed the movie as being more than a little campy, and I just wasn’t sure how well they would be able to translate a rather complex story from page to screen. As it turns out, they did so quite well.
It’s predictably dark and, at points, startlingly violent, but in this it stayed true to the original comic. I appreciate that. There’s more intelligence here than in your average superhero movie, and the action sequences did not disappoint.
One thing I could have done with less of were the frequent and loitering shots of the naked blue dude floating about the place.
I certainly think that having read the book beforehand helped with my enjoyment immensely. If I’d tried to follow the movie without having in mind some of the details provided by the book, I would have been more than a little lost on more than one occasion.
This one gets added to my Blu-ray collection when it comes out.
