Gratitude – 01/02/2009
Today, I am grateful for:
1. Simon Pegg. You may remember him from Shaun of the Dead, a funny (if very macabre) movie, and more recently from the highly entertaining Run Fat Boy Run. This was one of those increasingly rare laugh-out-loud films, made all the more comical by Pegg’s portrayal of the good-hearted if bumbling hero.
2. Crock pots. This week, while I was on enforced vacation and my wife had to work, I’ve been making suppers. Many of these suppers have involved the use of a crock pot, for 2 reasons: first, the slow cooking gives stews and soups a great flavour; and second, it allows me to chop everything up in the morning, throw it in the pot, and then more or less forget it for 8 hours.
3. French onion soup (without red wine). I tried making it with red wine this week. It was awful. Truly, unmitigatedly so. Quite possibly the worst soup I have ever tasted, and easily among the top five Terrible Meals I Have Made – and that includes the time I tried roasting a woodchuck, with stuffing. Without said red wine, however, the soup isn’t half bad.
