Facebook, revisited
I’m getting the sense that there’s a growing unrest in the ranks of Facebook users. Today’s New York Times has an article describing how Facebook is making it easier for people to permanently delete their online profile (rather than merely deactivating it, which would still leave all the content on the Facebook servers).
It’s kind of interesting that we were talking about this just a couple of days ago, and I was referencing posts on Techdirt and Lamppost that were discussing the relevance and role of Facebook. Seeing an article like this in the Times, which would indicate that Facebook is having to respond to an increased customer demand to be permanently removed from the service, is telling. It seems that Facebook is at a crossroads, and will either need to make some significant changes to their offering to remain relevant, or join the growing pile of ho-hum social networking sites.
